Ariel writes – a weekly Scriptural devotion:

But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed. (Isaiah 53:5 NIV)

Isaiah 53 is about a man who dies. Twice we’re told he wasn’t much to look at. 5 times that he was rejected by people. About 14 times that he suffered pain in some way. 3 times that he was punished, 11 times that he bore our sins, and 3 times that it was the LORD’s handiwork. There is no doubting God is telling us here that this man’s death is the sacrifice that pays for our sins. In Acts 8:35 Philip uses this very passage of Scripture to tell someone the good news about Jesus. Yes, Jesus is the sacrifice that pays for your sins. The debt of death that you owed God Jesus paid on the cross. And in the above verse we see his death also achieved peace and healing. This idea of peace in biblical thought is not just the absence of war but the presence of all things good and the idea of healing is of two pieces being joined, made whole again. Therefore, Jesus’ death joins us to God in whom we find the presence of all things good.
