Ariel writes – a weekly Scriptural devotion:

You should not gloat over your brother in the day of his misfortune, nor rejoice over the people of Judah in the day of their destruction, nor boast so much in the day of their trouble. (Obadiah 1:12 NIV)

God is talking to the Edomites who were direct descendants of Esau the brother of Jacob. So, not only were they the closest related nation to Israel but they were family. Yet, here we read on the day Israel was overthrown by the Babylonians they rejoiced rather than mourned, they bragged and boasted rather than humbled themselves. How sad it is when someone gloats over the demise of another but to do this over family is heartless, horrible, even hateful. Therefore, God promised them destruction so that they would be brought low. He told them in v4; “Though you soar like the eagle and make your nest among the stars, from there I will bring you down, declares the Lord.” You see, God hates it when we hate others, especially family. The church is the family of God. In Christ we are all united as brothers and sisters, this means we are not to gloat over each other’s misfortunes but mourn instead. After all, in Jesus we have one who mourns with us and cares for us, so shouldn’t we do the same?
