Ariel writes – a weekly Scriptural devotion:

Therefore, my brothers and sisters, make every effort to confirm your calling and election. For if you do these things, you will never stumble, (2 Peter 1:10 NIV)

Coasting. Coasting is what many Christians do in their relationship with Jesus and other believers. Is it any surprise then that some stumble? That some are lead astray? Peter does not encourage you to cruise along in your faith. Following Jesus is not a holiday. Peter doesn’t even ask; he tells you to “make every effort to confirm your calling and election.” Don’t for a minute think this is works! Calling and election are by God’s grace alone in Christ. What Peter means is growing in Godlike qualities shows that you’re saved by God’s grace. This teaches us that Christianity is not a stagnant faith. Stagnant by any terms is never good anyway. You know what happens to stagnant water, don’t you? Another analogy is marriage. Just cause you have a ring on your finger doesn’t mean you can cruise along in your relationship with your spouse. Any good strong marriage takes effort. Qualities like perseverance, self control, love, forgiveness, repentance are all there. That’s what it takes so that your marriage won’t crumble. And making every effort to have Godlike qualities is what it takes so that your faith won’t stumble.
