Ariel writes – a weekly Scriptural devotion:

“You will not certainly die,” the serpent said to the woman. “For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” (Genesis 3:4-5 NIV)

“You will not certainly die,”. It’s hard to know how much the serpent knew. Did he know God would be gracious to them and so told a half-truth or did he think God would kill them and so outright lied? Either way he was there to trick the woman and he knew exactly what would tempt her – “and you will be like God,…!” And yet there is nothing wrong with this temptation, is there? Don’t you want to be more like God? In fact, aren’t we commanded to be so in scripture; 1 Peter 1:15-16? Yes, we are! So what was the problem? It was the way Eve was tricked to go about it – to break God’s command. Sometimes we can do the same. Talk up our own godliness by lying, desire someone else’s spiritual gift with envy, place church attendance above our character and so create an idol. So what should Eve have done? She should have trusted God’s love in the command and so should we.
