Ariel writes – a weekly Scriptural devotion:

One day the older daughter [of Lot] said to the younger, “Our father is old, and there is no man around here to give us children—as is the custom all over the earth. Lets get our father to drink wine and then sleep with him and preserve our family line through our father.” (Genesis 19:31-32)

Why would you get your own father drunk and then sleep with him? Why sin like this just to preserve the family line? Well, let us ask, who is mostly at fault here? Yes, it’s true Lot’s daughters shouldn’t have got him drunk and slept with him but listen to their words; “there is no man around here to give us children—as is the custom all over the earth.” Abraham and Isaac kept with custom and found spouses for their sons but Lot didn’t do the same for his daughters. It seems he was a lazy father! Their sin was upon him too and even more so since in that culture it was the father’s role to find a husband for his daughters. Now, without advocating arranged marriage we can still ask ourselves this question; “Parents are you encouraging your sons and daughters to seek and marry godly partners?” Let us not be lazy like Lot!
