Ariel writes – a weekly Scriptural devotion:

“And there before me was a second beast, which looked like a bear. It was raised up on one of its sides, and it had three ribs in its mouth between its teeth. It was told, ‘Get up and eat your fill of flesh! “After that, I looked, and there before me was another beast, one that looked like a leopard. And on its back it had four wings like those of a bird. This beast had four heads, and it was given authority to rule.” (Daniel 7:5-6)

Here two kingdoms are described – the kingdom of the Medes and Persians, and the kingdom of Greece. Daniel was given this awful vision to show him what was to come and to reaffirm to him that God was in control of history. And herein lies a lesson for us too. If we read carefully we see that God tells one kingdom to devour and another to rule. If we look at history now we see superpowers flexing their muscles and little powers making their stand. We see them being demanding, aggressive, ruthless, and murderous. They are two faced, full of lies, have little regard for human life, and commit atrocities on a whim. Yet God is still in control, even giving these kingdoms permission and power to rule. Scary but reassuring too, don’t you think?
