Ariel writes – a weekly Scriptural devotion:

When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. (Matthew 9:36 NIV)

At the end of Matthew 9 Jesus’ ministry is described in two short sentences and this is one of them. Now, we’re told here that he had compassion on the crowds. The dictionary defines ‘compassion’ as – ‘a feeling of deep sympathy and sorrow for another who is stricken by misfortune, accompanied by a strong desire to alleviate the suffering.’ Firstly, we see that Jesus’ ministry was motivated by the suffering of those around him as well as his theological agenda. Secondly, and more importantly, is that this motivation turned into action. When he saw sheep in need of protection and provision he took it upon himself to be their Shepherd. Consider how truly wonderful this is! What other god is there who is moved by people in distress? What other god is willing to serve the weak? We in Jesus have a God who is compassionate towards the harassed and helpless. In Jesus a God who is tender even towards you a sinner when you’re fatigued and feeble. Now that’s a God worth having, isn’t it?
