Ariel writes – a weekly Scriptural devotion:

“So then, it was not you who sent me here, but God. He made me father to Pharaoh, lord of his entire household and ruler of all Egypt.”

Genesis 45:8 NIV)

After being made fun of, laughed at and nearly murdered by his own brothers Joseph was sold into slavery by them. So imagine the hate and vengefulness Joseph could have felt towards them even after 22 years. However, Joseph could see the bigger picture and who exactly was in control – God! Joseph recognised that the position he held was due to God’s plan to save his whole family. His brothers’ jealous and harmful actions 22 years ago were just part of God’s plan too. In this way Joseph is a model of Jesus. Jesus was betrayed by his own kind as well but this too was part of God’s plan all along to save us. The difference however is that Joseph only saw God’s plan after the fact while Jesus before. The question is; which is easier? To know God’s plan beforehand or not? You might say Jesus had it easier because he knew but then Joseph never had to bear the sins of the world on a cross, did he? God’s plan in suffering, revealed or not, is never easy.
