Ariel writes – a weekly Scriptural devotion:

Whom have I in heaven but you? And earth has nothing I desire besides you.

(Psalm 73:25 NIV)

One of the most beautiful verses to be found in the Bible. The first sentence a statement of fact, the second an exclamation of attraction. The LORD is his God completely: above and below, in head and in heart. But how did Asaph come to this moment of realisation and rapture? To begin with we see he came close to backsliding; “But as for me, my feet had almost slipped;…” (Psalm 73:2a). Reason being he envied the evil doers around him because they seemed better off but then he had a moment of epiphany; “…till I entered the sanctuary of God; then I understood their final destiny.” (Psalm 73:17). So what did he see in God’s sanctuary (temple) that changed his mind? The sacrifices of course! Those dead animals soaked in blood who had taken the sinner’s place. You see, evil doers have no such shelter – sanctuary. They stand condemned; that is their final destiny. This is why Asaph now in v25 breaks out in such certain and passionate praise; and when we see God’s sanctuary – Jesus, we do the same.
