Ariel writes – a weekly scriptural devotion:

After this, Job opened his mouth and cursed the day of his birth.  (Job 3:1 NIV)

There is no triteness here. No brave face. No spirited smile. Job has suffered, is suffering. He sits in a pile of ashes scratching his agonising sores while cradling his broken heart. His fortune, family, and health are gone and so he curses the day of his birth. Job is simply saying; ‘It would have been better that I had not been born!’ From Patriarchs to Psalmists to Prophets we hear complaining, cursing, and crying when confronted with great tragedy. The pain of loss is felt so deeply that it crushes the human spirit, at times even the will to live. And yet we see that in all this Job remained righteous! How can this be? How is it possible to curse but to be godly at the same time? It is because Job’s words echo the fact that we live in a fallen world. That sometimes in a very tragic way things are not as they should be. And so to honour God yet also complain, curse, and cry is okay but to only put on a brave face and smile is not godly – that it is trite.
