Online service, 9th August

Welcome to our CP10 service online

Welcome, and thanks for joining us for church today! We’re really glad that you can worship God with us, whether sharing this service with others on Zoom, with friends at home, or just wherever you are. If you’d like to share church with us or know more about God, don’t hesitate to contact our minister, Chadd Hafer at chaddhafercp10@gmail.com. Introducing the service today is Anthony, who serves as a deacon in our church.

Songs of worship

What beauty demands such praises

What splendour outshines the sun

What majesty rules with justice

It is our God, the one and only Holy God

Our next song is a joyous song that reminds us that it was always God’s plan to save us – In Jesus, we are saved and released from the every sinful stain in our lives. Our response is to sing together with all his people, praising our Redeemer for all he has done for us.

Announcements & prayer points

Here is some news about what’s going on in our church. Do read through them, and commit them to God in prayer. If you are sharing worship as a group, your host can lead the group in prayer. Please also refer to the complete bulletin attached to your service email for further details and statistics.

Covid-19

The second wave of Covid-19 in Sydney means we need to pay special attention to distancing and isolation rules as a church, even when meeting at homes. Please check our church’s Covid Safe plan (https://wsccc.org.au/news/ ) on our website, which is updated regularly. Note that all visitors to the church buildings require a facemask to be worn. Also take time to reflect on God’s message to us during Covid: a call to prayerfulness, faithfulness, unity and compassion. Pray also for God’s mercy and healing on affected areas such as Victoria, the USA, and Brazil.

Church building project at Croydon Park

The CDP is starting in the next few weeks! Thank you to those who have worked hard to clear out the church buildings and store all the items. The builders will start preparing the site in coming weeks, and construction will commence in September, with a target completion date in April 2021. Please pray for the preparations by the project team, and for God’s continued provision of finances for the project.

Annual General Meeting

The AGM for church members will be held at 12:30pm, Sunday, September 27, and includes election of deacons for the next 2-year term. Depending on restrictions, the AGM will be held either at Strathfield or via Zoom. AGM papers will be sent out via email to members. If you are a member, please ensure that the church has your updated email address (contact Chadd or one of the deacons). Pray that godly, equipped and committed deacons are elected to lead the church for the future.

ReachOut

WSCCC goes to ReachOut Missions Conference – virtually – on Saturday, 12 Sep 2020!  You are invited to our ReachOut hub – an opportunity to learn & be inspired from God’s Word and missionaries about what God is doing in the world.  Details in the bulletin or send your queries to wsccc.reachout2020@gmail.com. Here’s a video to show you what to expect.

Mission

Aaron and Amy Koh serve as missionaries in Taiwan. They have been teaching the Bible at Shuili Primary School. As they re-start classes in September, pray that God will work in the hearts of the children.

Amy meets with women at Cornerstone Coffee Shop for Bible study. Pray that other women will become interested to join her. Pray also that Aaron has opportunities to share the Bible with other men.

The Taiwan council will be meeting in a few weeks – pray for them as they work on training of OMF missionaries. Pray also for Aaron as he produces videos for OMF NZ.

Please take a moment now to pray for these points.

Offering to the Lord in finance and prayer

Offerings are a spiritual way to give back to God, as an act of worship and gratitude, reflecting what is in our hearts. The church seeks to honour God with how our finances are used. It is wise to balance your giving across the church’s 3 funds (general, mission and building funds). For regulars, we encourage you to set up automatic electronic deposits, otherwise, you may also give using the banking details below.

Please take a moment now individually to prayerfully offer your “offering” to the Lord. Even if you have set up automatic giving, quietly commit this from your heart to God. After this, if you are sharing in worship as a group, the leader can lead us all in the offering prayer.

Take a Break – Meet & Greet

If you are sharing this worship service with others, why not take a few minutes to grab a drink, and have a chat with others. During this time of Covid, be encouraged that we can still gather, in spirit, as a church!

Singing

Whilst we do not know the time, we know He WILL definitely come again. Let us keep watch as we await his return, for He has called us a kingdom of priests. Let us devote ourselves to following and serving Christ.

Bible Reading

1 Thessalonians 4:13-5:11

Believers Who Have Died

13 Brothers and sisters, we do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope. 14 For we believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him. 15 According to the Lord’s word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep. 16 For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever. 18 Therefore encourage one another with these words.

The Day of the Lord

Now, brothers and sisters, about times and dates we do not need to write to you, for you know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. While people are saying, “Peace and safety,” destruction will come on them suddenly, as labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape.

But you, brothers and sisters, are not in darkness so that this day should surprise you like a thief. You are all children of the light and children of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness. So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep, but let us be awake and sober. For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, get drunk at night. But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, putting on faith and love as a breastplate, and the hope of salvation as a helmet. For God did not appoint us to suffer wrath but to receive salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ. 10 He died for us so that, whether we are awake or asleep, we may live together with him. 11 Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.

Sermon

Today’s sermon continues our series on Paul’s two letters to the Thessalonians. Our minister Chadd Hafer will be preaching on Christ’s resurrection and second coming (based on 1 Thess 4:13-5:11).

Song of Response

Our next song is based on our passage today. It reminds us that we belong to the Day of the Lord. It means we live with our eyes fixed on that final day, when Jesus returns to judge sin and bring the righteous back to the Father.

In belonging to the day and not the night, we live with different values, goals and desires than the world around us. We share the redeeming sacrifice of Christ with others because our God is patient and wants everyone to come back to Him.

Join us next week for church!

Thanks for joining us for church today! We hope that you have been encouraged by worshiping with us, and hearing from God’s Word. Feel free to contact us anytime for more information. We also hope that you join us again next week for church, as we continue our series on Thessalonians – our topic will be The Final Rebellion and the Man of Lawlessness (2 Thess 2:1-17). Our speaker will be pastor Chadd Hafer and we will be having a live Q&A session after the sermon covering this week and and next weeks topics.
