Ariel writes – a weekly Scriptural devotion:

Tremble and do not sin; when you are on your beds, search your hearts and be silent. Offer the sacrifices of the righteous and trust in the Lord. (Psalm 4:4-5 NIV)

Your bed is an easy place to sin. When all digital distractions are put aside and you lay on you pillow at night your mind might start racing over some injustices done against you. Maybe your friend’s indifference to your success. Or perhaps your mum or dad’s harsh words. Or maybe your child’s nasty tone back at you. Maybe even worse, your parents hit you, your child swore at you, your spouse betrayed you! You now feel deeply hurt, deceived, and abandoned. You get all twisted inside! More than that, you start to sin! You start plotting and scheming, despising and hating. Anger starts consuming you, eating away at your soul. So what remedy could there be? What could cure your sorry state? The remedy David offers is to keep silent. Say nothing. But this doesn’t mean you sweep it under the carpet. No. David says to give it over to God by offering right sacrifices (trusting in Jesus’ death) for your sins and trusting in God for theirs. For remember, in the end it’s God’s job to avenge, not ours. So sometimes saying nothing in the face of ungodliness is the godliest thing to do.
