Ariel writes – a weekly Scriptural devotion:

“For God will bring every deed into judgment, including every hidden thing, whether it is good or evil.” (Ecclesiastes 12:14 NIV)

Let me tell you why we need a God who is just. The book of Ecclesiastes opens (1:2) and closes (12:8) by telling us that “Everything is meaningless.” Then it shows us how we live in a cruel and unjust world; where wisdom brings grief, pleasures doesn’t please, wealth never satisfies, oppressors rule, wickedness abounds, the innocent suffer, and in the end everyone dies. And so life indeed is meaningless unless of course someone can set things right. And that is why we need a God who is just, and the verse above tells us that all this “meaningless” matters to God! In fact, if he didn’t care about right and wrong he wouldn’t be worth loving to begin with but… the verse above is intended for everyone, including you and me. Suddenly loving this God falls out of the equation and fear takes its place. So will this just God now also show us mercy? Fortunately for us he does by sending Jesus. This new equation is beautiful in its simplicity and grace: Jesus substitutes himself for me and allows himself to be judged for my wrongful deeds. I just love this merciful God who is both just and my justifier.
