Ariel writes – a weekly Scriptural devotion:

That day will bring about the destruction of the heavens by fire, and the elements will melt in the heat. But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, where righteousness dwells. (2 Peter 3:12b-13 NIV)

“That day” will be a day of destruction as has never been seen. We have no way of likening “this day” of fiery destruction. It is beyond our experience or understanding. Peter says “this day” will bring a fire so intense it will destroy things which appear to be indestructible. The heavens will be incinerated by fire and so will the elements of the earth. Everything recorded in Genesis will be destroyed. All life, all matter, even the heavens themselves. Nothing will be spared. A pure and utter extinction. All previous judgments cannot convey the magnitude of this judgment to come. And we have only one reason to believe it will happen – because God said it would. Our belief in “this coming day” is solely based upon our confidence in God’s promised word. No wonder those who do not trust in God mock the possibility of such “a day”. “But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, where righteousness dwells.” Amen!
