Ariel writes – a weekly Scriptural devotion:

Above all, you must understand that in the last days scoffers will come, scoffing and following their own evil desires. They will say, “Where is this ‘cominghe promised? Ever since our ancestors died, everything goes on as it has since the beginning of creation.” (2 Peter 3:3-4 NIV)

Peter just wrote an entire scathing chapter (2 Peter 2:1-22) on false teachers but now he uses these words; “Above all, you must understand…”. This means what now follows is of greater importance to understand – scoffers. But why scoffers? Firstly, it seems they are part of the church like false teachers. The words “will come” and the fact they know about Jesus tells us this. Secondly, they follow “their own evil desires”. Again, just like false teachers they are morally corrupt. Thirdly, “they will” deny Jesus’ promised return by questioning it. This is the crunch. This is the clear and complete denial of Jesus’ Lordship to his face. A denial that he will keep his promise; saying Jesus is a liar. What repugnant and depraved minds they have! These scoffers are spiritually sick to the core, not Christians at all. Do not believe a word they say! Jesus will return one day just as he promised. Of this we can be sure because his word is sure.
