Ariel writes – a weekly Scriptural devotion:

The former regulation is set aside because it was weak and useless (for the law made nothing perfect), and a better hope is introduced, by which we draw near to God. (Hebrews 7:18-19)

The priesthood and law given to Israel under Moses was a gracious gift that showed them how to approach God. Yet, it was still weak and useless. Why? Because it made nothing perfect! Therefore, perfection is what is required to approach a perfect God. The problem is many people think nothing of this. By their attitudes and actions they think God will settle for second best. That a half-hearted allegiance or a few good works are enough. Some even think all you need to do is tip the scales in your favour by at least 51%. Yet if perfection is required then 99% isn’t good enough. What we are talking about here is absolute 100%. It is in very essence pure and spotless, flawless and faultless, immaculate and impeccable. Which one of us can say we have lived such a life? Or given such a sacrifice to God? The Lord Jesus can that’s who, and it’s only through him the blameless Son and sacrifice by which we can draw near to God. Think nothing of this? Rather think of nothing else!
