Ariel writes – a weekly Scriptural devotion:

“If your brother or sister sins against you, rebuke them; and if they repent, forgive them. Even if they sin against you seven times in a day and seven times come back to you saying ‘I repent,’ you must forgive them.” (Luke 17:3b-4 NIV)

How easy negative rebuking comes to our hearts and then flows onto our lips! For some of us it trickles constantly like a stream gradually wearing the sinner down while for others of us it explodes like a bomb and blows them away. Rebuking instead should be gentle and positive; spurring the sinner to repentance which then stirs you to forgive. And even if they sin against you again, again, and again your duty is to forgive. Up to seven times Jesus says; meaning an unlimited number of times. “Oh, how hard!”; you say. “How impossible!” “That same sin drives me up the wall. It causes me grief and hurts me greatly every time.” Yes, true forgiveness requires considerable patience, calls for immense selflessness, and then must be soaked with extravagant grace. Truly, it is no easy task but Jesus here is not asking for something which he wouldn’t do himself. For just ask yourself sinner how often he has forgiven you?
