Ariel writes – a weekly Scriptural devotion:

Cornelius stared at him in fear. “What is it, Lord?” he asked. The angel answered, “Your prayers and gifts to the poor have come up as a memorial offering before God.” (Acts 10:4 NIV)

Cornelius is visited by an angel who calls out his name. Cornelius immediately responds with the words; “What is it, Lord?” Here is a servant ready to serve. However, one might find this strange considering Cornelius was a Gentile centurion in a very prestigious Italian regiment in the capital of Caesarea. Here is a man who could have so easily been full of pride in his power yet is submissive to the God of his Jewish captors. How he came to be this way we are not told but what we are told is that God noticed him because of his prayers and gifts to the poor. Now isn’t that just wonderful to read?! Too often we think that God will only notice us if we serve as a leader at church or win someone over to Jesus. But, in this little verse we find encouragement in our daily relationship with God and our humble service to others, and some of us need this kind of encouragement.
