Ariel writes – a weekly Scriptural devotion:

But someone drew his bow at random and hit (Ahab) the king of Israel between the sections of his armour…. The blood from his wound ran onto the floor of the chariot, and that evening he died. (1 Kings 22:34a, 35b NIV)

A person of no consequence randomly lets an arrow fly that by chance happens to strike the king of Israel between his armour and causes his demise. A one in a million shot and he wasn’t even aiming! It just wasn’t King Ahab’s day, was it? But here, in every ounce of randomness and every gram of chance, lies the full weight of God’s sovereignty. If only we would go back a few verses we would see that God warned King Ahab that he would die if he went to battle. But Ahab refused to heed God’s word and went anyway. He even disguised himself so as not to be seen and then attacked; and it actually worked! But someone drew his bow at random… and the rest is history. There’s a lesson here, isn’t there? Behind the pages of history and even the curtain that hides our tomorrows; God is sovereign still.
