Ariel writes – a weekly Scriptural devotion:

The Lord said to Moses and Aaron in Egypt, “This month is to be for you the first month, the first month of your year…. “Celebrate the Festival of Unleavened Bread, because it was on this very day that I brought your divisions out of Egypt. (Exodus 12:1-2, 17a NIV)

The 1st of January is the Australian New Year’s Day, a day that is marked with BBQs and New Year’s resolutions. This year the 31st of January will mark the Chinese New Year, traditionally a day to honour families and wish for “good fortune”, “happiness”, and “wealth.” The 1st of Nisan is the Biblical New Year’s Day, the start of the month of the Exodus from Egypt. Of course there are many similarities between these festivals like families getting together and eating deliciously roasted meats but the last holds a deep contrast. God’s people were to mark their New Year in a solemn way with blood on their doors and eating bitter herbs – it was the Passover meal. The focus was not on wealth, health, or self but on a sacrificial lamb that paid for their sins. What a way to begin a new year!
