Exodus Bible study guide

Exodus series (Exodus 1-15)

Exodus is a Biblical epic that was destined for the big screen! It reveals how God spared a Hebrew infant named Moses and then used him to deliver the Israelite nation from slavery. It contains fascinating events such as God appearing to Moses in a burning bush, God’s ten plagues against Egypt, the Passover and God rescuing Israel through the Red Sea. No wonder filmmakers from Cecil B. DeMille to DreamWorks transformed this amazing Biblical story into modern big screen classics.

But Exodus is more than just a great story. Historically speaking, it explains the very existence of the Israelite nation and millions of Jews still celebrate the Passover today. About 1500 years after The Exodus, Jesus used the Passover symbols to reveal his plan to save the world through his own sacrificial death and resurrection. Christians have also continued to observe The Lord’s Supper to this day.

Our modern-day concept of ‘being on a spiritual-journey’ is also probably based on Israel’s Exodus journey from Egyptian slavery to the Promised Land. For believers in Jesus Christ, this spiritual journey takes us from slavery to sin to our promised eternal blessing and inheritance. Therefore, the best way to interpret the significance of Exodus is to understand how Christ, like Moses, is our spiritual deliverer.
